How it goes
Nothing is given. Everything is walked to.
-
Arrive
You start in City Hall with empty pockets and a jobs board on the wall. The big doors open onto a Gudhjem street.
-
Work
Collect the litter along Gudhjem’s streets, shift crates on Rønne’s quays, or crunch numbers at the office. Rounds pay when you finish them.
-
Rent
A day's wages rents a bedsit — paid up front, for as many days as you choose. Your key works at a real front door.
-
Own
Buy the place, or a better one. Furnish it, repaint it, lock it, let it out. The Bureau advances; so do other citizens.
The property register
A hundred and forty-four addresses, and no more.
Land here is scarce on purpose: the agency's register is the whole supply, and when a home is bought it is off the market until its owner sells. New addresses only arrive when more of the island is surveyed. Eleven crossings already run — the coast roads, the railway lines that closed in 1968, and the packet out to Christiansø — and every one is ridden, because six to twenty-seven kilometres is not a step.
The island
Thirty kilometres of it, and all of it real.
A real island at full size. Ten regions cut from Bornholm where they really are, built from the Danish national survey: Gudhjem’s harbour on its granite slope, Rønne’s ferry port, Almindingen’s forest and the rift valley through it, the moor at Paradisbakkerne, the ruin on the crag at Hammershus, the dunes at Dueodde. The edges are the sea and the cliff — never a fence.

House rules
No fast travel. Anywhere. Ever.
Your friend's house is where it is. The office is where it is because somebody put it there. When somebody says they own the mansion on the hill, you have stood at the bottom of that hill — so it means something.
— the whole design, in one rule
Menus tell you addresses, not teleports. The walk is the game: the jobs are on the way, the shops are on the way, and so is everyone else. Bornholm is thirty kilometres end to end, and all of it is real ground: hedged lanes above Gudhjem, the rift valley with its twenty-two metre walls through Almindingen, the waterfall in Døndalen cutting to the sea cliffs, granite and gorse at Paradisbakkerne, the finest sand in Europe at Dueodde. None of it was invented — it was surveyed, at 1:1, and the beta plays all of it.
Downloads
Download once. It looks after itself.
Version 0.19.3, built 2026-09-01 with Godot 4.7.2. The game connects to this server on its own. Make an account first — the game's login screen sends you here for it.
You only need to download this once. ROOMS keeps itself up to date: it checks for a new version shortly after you start playing, fetches it in the background — about 38 MB, not the whole 129 MB again — and switches to it next time you open the game. Nothing is changed underneath a session you are in the middle of. You can see what it is doing, and ask it to check now, under Options. A new download is only needed when the game engine or the artwork changes, and it will tell you so rather than quietly failing.

Getting it to run
Each system will want a word first.
The builds are not code-signed with paid certificates, so the first launch needs one extra step. After that they open like anything else.
macOS
Unzip it, then right-click ROOMS and choose Open. Double-clicking gives you no way past — the option to open it anyway only appears on the right-click menu.
If macOS says it is damaged and can't be opened, that is a build from before 0.2.1. Either download this one, or clear the quarantine flag on the old one:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ROOMS.app
Windows
SmartScreen will interject. Click More info, then Run anyway.
Some antivirus tools take a moment to scan an unsigned executable the first time; let them finish.
Linux
Unzip, mark it executable, run.
chmod +x rooms.x86_64 ./rooms.x86_64
